The Fun Place to Learn to Paddle

 

 

Check List

 

You are ready to have a great paddling trip when the applicable ITEMS are CHECKED:

 

1.  Float plan filed – someone knows where I am going and when I will be back.
2.  WEATHER REPORT obtained
3.   CAR KEYS SECURED – DUCT TAPED TO YOUR BODY,IN YOUR CLOTHING, EXTRA SET AT YOUR CAR
4.   DRY CLOTHES – A SET IN A DRY BAG – Ziploc, garbage bag, commercial paddling dry bag [see hypothermia page]
5.   Location information – map, GPS with coordinates – backtracking on
6.   SUNSCREEN – always carry even in cooler weather you can get burned from wind and water reflections
7.  Fluids – WATER WATER – you can and will dehydrate in the middle of the river – other drinks are fine but nothing beats H20
8.  Sustenance – FOOD – snacks – the motor for your boat is you and that motor needs fuel- indulge yourself
9.  RAINGEAR – thunder boomers are a reality – temperatures can easily drop 30+ degrees – garbage bags make a great poncho
10.  BUG Repellent – Bugs are a reality in the South – so be prepared
11.  Extra paddle – you don’t want to experience that ole saying “up the creek without one” – secure it to the boat
12.  PFD – on your BODY
13.  Emergency ITEMS – whistle, flashlight, first aid kit, potty paper, sharp knife
14.   HAT – head covering – not only to protect your noggin but to keep the glare off your face
15.  SHADES – sunglasses will make the trip much more enjoyable that SUN reflecting off the water is a real trip killer
16.  GLASSES – do you wear RX glasses or just sunglasses? Get a glasses retainer – glasses are no good on the bottom of the river
17.  Garbage bags – so you can take home everything you brought with you – LEAVE NO TRACE
18.  Fire starting kit – lighter, matches, combustibles
19.  SPONGE – you may need to remove water from your boat
20.  DUCT tape – don’t paddle without it  - 10,000 uses – repair boats, paddles and makes a great emergency bandage
